Looking at the ingredient list initially, I wasn’t blown away by the Ignite Xwerks formula, especially after spending months using pre-workouts with very high clinical doses of performance-based ingredients like citrulline and beta-alanine (see my review of Transparent Labs BULK).

What Is Xwerks Ignite?
Xwerks Ignite is a pre-workout supplement focusing on energy-boosting ingredients and nootropics.
While this product is not necessarily formulated for a great pump or noticeable strength increases, it does provide good, sustainable energy without a crash. The key part is “without a crash” – which is a significant plus.
It comes in four flavors: Green Apple, Orange, Blue Raspberry, and Watermelon, and uses artificial sweeteners and flavors in its formula. While this results in a product that tastes really good, the use of artificial ingredients may be a turnoff for customers who prefer a more natural product.
Ignite contains a low level of caffeine, at least as far as caffeinated pre-workouts go, with a dose of 150mg per scoop, as much as two small cups of coffee. Many caffeinated pre-workouts fall between 200mg and 400mg, on par with the FDA’s recommended limit of 400mg daily. For example, Legion Pulse (which I also tested) contains 350mg of caffeine per serving.
This makes Ignite a good option for individuals who enjoy other caffeine sources throughout their day like coffee or energy drinks, since they can safely consume one other caffeine source alongside this pre-workout and stay within an acceptable daily caffeine intake.
This is also a product that could be double-scooped, which would provide you with 300mg of caffeine and clinical doses of citrulline and beta-alanine.
The downside to doing this is that your container will only have 15 servings, and the cost per serving goes up to just over $3.25 (yikes!).
Claims vs Reality: How I Felt After Taking Xwerks Ignite?
I was pleasantly surprised by this pre-workout!
I had spent weeks testing some really heavy hitters like Swolverine and Transparent Labs Bulk & Stim-Free, which have full clinical doses of a lot of strength and pump-based ingredients that I enjoy.
When I looked at the ingredient list for Xwerks Ignite, I wasn’t expecting too much.
It has lower doses of citrulline (3g) and beta-alanine (1.5g) than the other pre-workouts I have been using, and I wasn’t sure if the mental focus blend found in the Ignite formula would be enough to overcome the low dosing.
It is difficult to give a solid scientific-based opinion on some of the other ingredients used like DMAE and L-Tyrosine since many of them don’t have an established clinical dose.
That being said, the doses in the Xwerks formula are common doses used in other pre-workouts.
As I said from the top, I was pleasantly surprised with this pre-workout. It well exceeded my expectations. The first time I used this for a training run, I set a personal best on my 5km time, which I hadn’t done in about 4 weeks, and I felt like I could have kept running indefinitely.
I had a similar experience when using it for my first lower-body workout. I trained first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, and I found my stamina was through the roof.
With some pre-workouts, I found myself lifting heavier weights right away and feeling an almost instant strength increase.
With Xwerks ignite, I felt most comfortable staying with my normal weight, but I was able to finish my prescribed reps with extra reps left in the tank. At one point, I finished my third set of lateral lunges and found myself wanting to do an extra one because my perceived effort level was so low.
One more thing to note is that Xwerks does not use artificial colors in its formula (see below).
The flavor I had was green apple, so I was expecting it to mix up green but instead, the product mixed up bright peachy pink.
Though it obviously doesn’t affect the product if the color doesn’t match the flavor, it was something that caught me off guard the first time.

This seems to me like a product that is meant to be double-scooped for experienced users.
At a single scoop dose, this product does provide good energy and mental focus but doesn’t meet clinical dosing for most ingredients.
When double-scooped, this product does meet clinical dosing standards for citrulline and beta-alanine at 6g and 3g, respectively.
Double scooping will obviously drastically increase the cost per serving, knocking this product out of a reasonable price range.

Rhodiola
Rhodiola is in a class of supplements known as adaptogens, which means it helps the body adapt to stress and reduce fatigue.
Research has shown that using Rhodiola has provided a significant improvement in cognition (i.e. mental focus, energy) and a significant reduction in fatigue symptoms.
For daily use, a dose as low as 50mg daily can be effective for fighting fatigue. For more immediate usage, like in the case of a pre-workout, doses ranging from 288-680mg have been shown to be effective.
Providing 500mg of rhodiola per serving, Ignite meets clinical dosing standards.
Side effects are rare, but a few cases of dizziness or dry mouth have been recorded with Rhodiola supplementation.
DMAE
DMAE is a compound that can be found naturally in foods like salmon, anchovies, and sardines. It affects neurotransmitters in the brain, protecting brain cells from damage.
The benefits of taking DMAE include increased mood, mental focus, and memory. When you see this ingredient in a formula, you can be confident that they prioritize mental focus and energy.
There is currently not enough evidence to have established a safe and healthy dosing strategy, but many pre-workout supplements use doses between 100 and 350mg per serving.
Ignite falls right in the middle of this range, with 200mg per serving.
Caffeine
Caffeine is one of the most consistent ingredients found in pre-workout supplements for its ability to stimulate the central nervous system.
This can result in improved performance during high-intensity activities, as well as improved endurance, strength, and cardiovascular performance.
Caffeine can come with side effects like increased heart rate or palpitations, jitteriness, or anxiety. To avoid these side effects, many companies will add calming ingredients (in this case, rhodiola) to their formulas.
Caffeine levels peak in the body 30-60 minutes after ingestion, so ideally you want to consume caffeine around 30 minutes before starting exercise.
The FDA recommends staying at or below 400mg daily, so the 150mg provided by Ignite is well within a safe range for most individuals but it is always recommended to start with a half serving of pre-workout first to assess your tolerance.
L-Citrulline
Citrulline is an amino acid that acts as a nitric oxide (NO) enhancer. This helps to dilate and constrict blood vessels, improving blood flow to the heart and muscles.
When taken pre-workout, Citrulline may help delay fatigue and increase muscular endurance, strength, and improve recovery.
It is recommended to take a dose of 6g of L-citrulline to see cardiovascular benefits, and the majority of research around citrulline and athletic performance has been done using a form of creatine called citrulline malate instead of L-citrulline.
This doesn’t mean that l-citrulline is less effective, it just doesn’t have the body of research behind it that citrulline malate does.
Regardless, Ignite only has 3g of l-citrulline per serving, therefore it falls short of clinical dosing standards.
L-Tyrosine
Tyrosine is an amino acid that is a precursor to dopamine and norepinephrine and may improve cognitive function. Similar to caffeine, this can result in increased time to fatigue, hence increasing exercise performance.
Tyrosine is a bit controversial in regards to pre-workouts, in that the research right now doesn’t fully support the anecdotal evidence.
What I mean by that is that highly respected individuals in the fitness industry, like Eric Trexler, a sports nutrition researcher with a Ph.D. in Human Movement Science praises tyrosine for its ability to work well with caffeine in boosting neurotransmitter function.
The research right now in regards to tyrosine supplementation uses doses of 100-150mg per kg of body weight, which translates to roughly 9-13g for a 200lb individual. Most pre-workouts, however, use significantly smaller doses, usually between 500mg and 2000mg.
Xwerks Ignite technically does not meet clinical dosing standards, but a full 2000mg dose puts it on the high end of pre-workout supplements and is likely to offer a positive energy and mental focus benefit.
Beta-Alanine
Many people know beta-alanine for its skin tingling side effects (a phenomenon called paresthesia).
Beta-alanine is an amino acid that can increase muscle carnosine levels. Carnosine acts as a buffer in the body, buffering the hydrogen ions that build up in muscle tissue and cause fatigue.
By supplementing with beta-alanine, muscle carnosine levels can be increased by anywhere from 15-85%. More carnosine means more delayed muscle fatigue, meaning you can produce a higher overall work output.
Long story short, beta-alanine = endurance and stamina = greater gains.
Effective dosing of beta-alanine is 3-6g taken daily for 4-10 weeks, with a maintenance dose of 1.2g daily afterwards.
Ignite falls in a grey area regarding whether or not it meets clinical dosing standards. It has a dose of 1.5g per scoop.
If you have already been supplementing with pre-workout that contains beta-alanine for a period of several months, then Ignite contains enough beta-alanine to qualify as a maintenance dose.
If you have not been taking beta-alanine consistently (daily) for a period of at least 4 weeks, then the dose found in Ignite is not clinically sufficient to fully saturate the body and see its full benefit.
You can try supplementing with extra beta-alanine on the side to bump up the total grams to 3-6g daily, and to take on your rest days.
Black Pepper
Black pepper, often found in pre-workouts under its patented name, Bioperine®, has been found to increase nutrient absorption by up to 30%.
Because it is required in such small doses (5-10mg daily), it is a common additive to pre-workout supplements because it is relatively inexpensive and can significantly increase how effectively the ingredients in your workout get absorbed by your body.

B Vitamins
Xwerks Ignite contains two different B Vitamins: B6 and B12.
B6 plays some key roles in nutrient absorption and helps to manufacture amino acids in the body, which in turn play a role in muscle protein synthesis.
B12 is necessary for creating new cells (like red blood cells), and for repairing damaged cells which makes it a great addition for enhancing workout recovery.
While there aren’t definitive clinical doses established in regards to B-vitamin supplementation before exercise specifically, Ignite contains 1000% of the Daily Value of Vitamin B6 and 50000% of your daily requirements for Vitamin B12, likely sufficient for supporting amino acid synthesis and improved recovery.
Highlights: What I Like About Xwerks Ignite
Great Mental Focus
Xwerks Ignite is loaded with nootropics and ingredients to improve energy and mental focus like Rhodiola, DMAE, Caffeine, and L-Tyrosine.
While I didn’t experience a fantastic pump or superhuman strength while taking this product, I did feel exceptionally dialed into my workouts.
During HIIT sessions and cardio sessions, I found myself wanting to push the pace and workout harder as my workout went on, despite feelings of physical fatigue. I was able to set some personal bests in my 5k and 8k run times when taking this product.
Reasonable Caffeine Level
Ignite contains 150mg of caffeine per serving, equal to approximately 2 small cups of coffee. This is well below the FDA’s accepted limit of 400mg daily and allows room for other sources of caffeine in your day like coffee or energy drinks.
Caffeine level in pre-workout supplements is a subjective factor, but I personally like that this product is on the low end for total caffeine intake.
Having a lower amount of caffeine makes the product more widely tolerable, especially for individuals who are sensitive to caffeine or enjoy other sources of caffeine in their day but want to be conscious of total caffeine intake.
Some people might consider this product to be underdosed based on their preferences, but it’s easy to add caffeine to a product. For instance, you can buy caffeine tablets in 100mg or 200mg doses to easily increase your pre-workout caffeine.
You can’t, however, take caffeine out of a product that is very highly caffeinated, so I think this was a smart move by Xwerks.
No Crash
The addition of Rhodiola in the formula can help to extend the effects of caffeine and reduce the rate at which you “come down” from the energizing stimulants in the formula. In other words, Rhodiola can help prevent a pre-workout crash.
Because I typically work out first thing in the morning, and have to immediately get my kids up and ready for daycare and then start my 8-12 hour work day, it’s crucial that my pre-workout doesn’t cause a crash.
I found that the mental focus from this formula carried on throughout my morning, even in non-workout related ways like helping me remember everything I need to grab and prepare for my work day.
Good Taste
A few times I tried this product, I noticed a pretty strong chemical smell immediately after mixing it. The taste, however, absolutely delivers! I sampled the green apple flavor and found it had a nice taste without being too sweet.
Ignite is also available in orange, blue raspberry, and watermelon flavors. For full transparency, the watermelon flavor got some pretty consistent negative reviews online, but I didn’t try that one personally.
Drawbacks What I Did Not Like About Xwerks Ignite
Misses the Mark on Clinical Dosing
While I appreciate the emphasis on focus and endurance, I was a bit disappointed in the low doses of citrulline and beta-alanine, two key ingredients for improving strength and endurance.
In Ignite’s defense, the product does not advertise itself as being the optimal formula for pump and strength. It clearly states on the product and throughout its website that it’s meant for focus, sustainable energy, and no crash.
If you are looking for a product that provides significant pumps or noticeable increases in strength and muscle mass, this probably isn’t the product for you.

While the cost itself for a pre-workout falls right among the average, this formula does not provide the clinical dosing that some other products in this same price range do. Overall it’s good value for a pre-workout.
Products like Transparent Labs Bulk make it difficult to give this product a higher price rating, since Bulk contains clinical doses of all ingredients and comes at an almost identical cost per serving.
For comparison, the scoop size for transparent labs bulk is 20.5g whereas the scoop size for Ignite is around 10.5g. This means that Bulk provides nearly twice the amount of active ingredients in its formula than Ignite does.
This is due in part to the fact that nootropic and energy-based ingredients are typically required in smaller doses, but if Ignite would have bumped up the citrulline to a clinical dose at least, then this product would get closer to a 4/5 or 5/5 rating.
Taste

I found the taste (of the green apple at least) to be fantastic. It was sweet and flavorful and wasn’t too strong when mixed with smaller volumes of water (6-8oz).
Taste is subjective, but I really enjoyed the overall flavor profile. The upside of having lower doses of ingredients like amino acids which can be naturally bitter or sour is that it is easier to get a good-tasting product.
The company uses sucralose as well as a natural and artificial flavoring in their product, which may be a pro or a con depending on your own lifestyle preferences.
Mixability
Our rating: 3/5
While the product dissolved reasonably well, it does mix up incredibly foamy and doesn’t dissolve completely, leaving a residue on the bottom when allowed to settle.
My camera didn’t do a great job of capturing this, but there’s about a ⅛ inch of coating along the bottom of my cup of product that didn’t dissolve.
I found that by swirling my cup before every sip of pre-workout, I was able to get most of the product dissolved with minimal residue left on the sides of the cup or along the bottom, but it can be a bit tedious.
Since it first mixes up foamy, I recommend letting it settle for a minute or so. The downside is that the product starts to settle on the bottom, so you’ve got to continuously swirl or shake it to prevent the settling.
Energy

Ignite contains a smaller amount of caffeine than other pre-workouts at 150mg per scoop compared to others which go as high as 400mg.
That being said, the blend of nootropics and ingredients to support the caffeine content result in a product that provides great energy and mental focus.

There is a small amount of citrulline (3g) which can support nitric oxide production and increase muscle pump, but this product does not meet clinical dosing standards for citrulline and contains no other ingredients to supply a muscle pump.
While this product does not provide a pump, I will reiterate in defense of Ignite that they don’t claim to provide a good pump. They are clearly committed to energy and focus.
Strength

This product is not designed to provide fast increases in strength. However, the blend of ingredients to support increasing endurance means that you will likely find that you can lift your normal weight for additional reps, therefore increasing total work volume.
I did test this for a few strength-based workouts, but I found myself being really drawn to this product for days that I knew were cardio training or HIIT-based, because of the stamina that it provides.

What Are Other Customers Saying About Xwerks Ignite?
Reviews for Xwerks Ignite were a bit all over the place, which was a bit surprising since in the past I have found the reviews for most products to be overwhelmingly positive.
One of the most common complaints from people was the taste/aftertaste. This seemed especially prominent in the watermelon flavor. I personally found the green apple to taste good, but it did have a very chemical smell immediately after I mixed it which was a bit off-putting.
On the Xwerks website, I found the ratings and reviews to be very inconsistent. What I mean by this is that one individual gave it a 5 star review, but stated that she was dissatisfied with the product and wouldn’t be ordering it again. Alternatively, someone gave it a 1-star review with the feedback that it didn’t work well for them personally but that it’s still definitely worth trying.
Despite being featured as “Amazon’s Choice” on their website, the product only has a 4.2/5 star rating on Amazon, with only 58% of reviewers giving 5-star ratings. This is quite low since we typically see 5-star ratings making up between 65% and 85% of all ratings.
Many reviewers leaving negative feedback claimed that this product simply “didn’t work well for them” or didn’t provide the strength increases they were looking for. Transparent Labs Bulk offers a formula that comes at a very similar cost per serving (around $1.66 per serving) but has clinical doses of citrulline, beta-alanine, betaine, and glycerol: all ingredients which support strength and muscle pump.
It contains a slightly higher level of caffeine (200mg) but is still low enough that you can still consume coffee or an energy drink throughout your day, similar to Xwerks Ignite.
Bulk has also made sure to pair their caffeine with ingredients that can help prevent the jitteriness or crash typically associated with moderate to high caffeine intake (in this case they use l-theanine instead of the Rhodiola that Ignite uses).
If you are looking for a product that focuses more on strength and pump and less on mental focus, then try Transparent Labs Bulk.
Legion Pulse Stim-Free
Xwerks does not offer a stimulant-free pre-workout, and even though their product is relatively low in caffeine, it still may not be suitable for individuals who work out in the evening or are highly sensitive to caffeine.
