Woke AF by Bucked Up pairs clinical doses of pump and endurance ingredients with three hard-hitting stimulants.

Unlike some pre-workouts on the market with high prices and moderate-to-low effectiveness, Woke AF delivers high quality at a reasonable cost per serving.

  • Woke AF costs $1.83 per serving, just slightly over the average cost of pre-workout, which is $1.61.  However, other pre-workouts with similar doses of caffeine and strength-boosting ingredients cost over $2.00 per serving, making Woke AF decent value for its formulation.
  • Woke AF delivers clinical doses of citrulline and beta-alanine to provide good pumps and muscular endurance. Some other ingredients fall below clinical dose standards (Alpha GPC, Taurine, and Astragin), but with 3 sources of stimulants, this pre-workout still provides strength improvements and excellent recovery based on my testing.
  • Woke AF pre-workout is a great option for experienced gym-goers who want a mood-boosting formula with dialed-in mental focus. Those looking for a lower stim option or people who are new to pre-workout might consider their lower-dosed option, Bucked Up, as an alternative (click for my review).

What Is Woke AF?

What Is Woke AF?

Woke AF is the higher-dosed, high-stimulant counterpart to the pre-workout, Bucked Up, by the brand of the same name.

Woke AF has full clinical doses of citrulline and beta-alanine, two ingredients known to support muscle pump and muscular endurance respectively.

Woke has a few ingredients in its formula that fall short of clinical dose standards just like Bucked Up. Alpha GPC, Taurine, and the two patented notoginseng ingredients AstraGin and ActiGin all fall below clinical dose standards.

That being said, Woke AF is meant to be a hard-hitting, high stimulant formula and it absolutely delivers.

It has 333mg of caffeine anhydrous and features two extra stimulants in dendrobium and synephrine. The overall effect is a euphoric energy and dialed-in mental focus.

For reference, a 16oz (grande) Starbucks coffee has around 310mg of caffeine.

One aspect that makes Woke AF stand out in the supplement industry is its unique naming and marketing. They deliberately tend towards a more “hardcore” aesthetic, toeing the line between appropriate and inappropriate language.

This trend is visible in the names of their products (Bucked Up, Woke AF, LFG, and Mother Bucker to name a few).

We also see this marketing tactic carry over into their flavor names, which include Swole Whip, Koala Freak, and Killa OJ.

In total, Woke AF is available in 21 different flavors and comes in a wide variety of sweet and sour fruit and juice-like flavors.

Claims vs Reality:  How I Felt After Taking Woke AF?

Woke AF Pre-Workout user experienced

Their website describes the experience of “skin-tearing muscle pumps” and “monk-like focus” from taking Woke AF.

While I found the muscle pump to be decent, I wouldn’t go so far as to describe my experience as “skin-tearing”.

This product is absolutely one of my favorite pre-workouts for a mood-boosting and dialed-in mental focus though.

Woke AF features one key ingredient called Dendrobium, which is a plant in the orchid family that features a key benefit of elevated mood.

I also tested Bucked Up, the lower-dose pre-workout manufactured by the same company that makes Woke AF, and I felt like it provided a euphoric-like energy even without the Dendrobium added.

Woke AF is a very similar formula, and the added dendrobium seemed to really amplify the energy and mental focus of this pre-workout.

I hit several new personal bests in my lifts while using this pre-workout and I felt like my recovery between sets as well as my recovery between workouts was really good.

I do wish that it was slightly lower in caffeine, but that’s just because I am a caffeine junkie and I like to drink coffee and/or energy drinks throughout my day.

At 333 mg of caffeine, Woke AF is nudging right up against the FDA’s recommended safe upper limit of 400mg daily.

This just means that on days when I take Woke AF, I have to be more conscious of my additional caffeine intake throughout the day.

Woke AF tasted great, mixed easily, and didn’t cause me any gastrointestinal upset or headaches when taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

Woke AF Pre-Workout

Citrulline

Citrulline is an amino acid that boosts nitric oxide levels in the body. Nitric Oxide helps the body to dilate and constrict its blood vessels.

Because of its effect on the circulatory system, nitric oxide can improve blood flow to the muscles providing a “pump”.

Supplementing with citrulline before exercise may help delay fatigue during high-intensity exercise. It also shows promise for increasing strength, endurance, and recovery.

The research is a bit inconsistent due to different research methods used and quality control issues.

So far, the optimal dose of citrulline appears to be 6-8g taken approximately 1 hour prior to exercise.

Woke AF offers 6g of citrulline per serving, meeting clinical dose standards.

Beta-Alanine

Beta-alanine is an amino acid that plays a key role in making carnosine in the body.

Carnosine is an important buffer in the body. It buffers the hydrogen ions that build up in muscles causing fatigue.

Supplementing with beta-alanine can increase muscle carnosine levels by anywhere from 15-85%. As a result of higher carnosine levels, muscle fatigue will be delayed. This will allow you to work out at higher intensities for longer periods of time.

Beta-alanine requires a loading phase, meaning it should be taken daily for several weeks (4 or more) to see its full benefit. This loading phase should be a dose of 3-6g daily. Afterwards, a maintenance dose of 1.2g daily is sufficient.

Woke AF contains 3.2g of beta-alanine, which meets clinical dose standards for both the loading phase and maintenance phase.

Woke AF

Caffeine

Caffeine is a stimulant that is found naturally in over 60 plants including tea and coffee beans.

As a stimulant, caffeine speeds up the central nervous system. This results in an increase in alertness and mood and delays exhaustion.

Caffeine has been well-researched as a pre-workout supplement. It has been proven to improve strength, endurance, and power as well as HIIT (high-intensity interval training) and cardiovascular performance.

Alpha-GPC

Alpha-GPC is a precursor to acetylcholine, which is a chemical messenger that is vital for muscle control and various brain functions.

It is theorized that by supplementing with Alpha-GPC, you increase the amount of acetylcholine in the body resulting in increased brain power and muscle function.

Alpha-GPC has been mostly studied in the realm of Alzheimer’s disease and improving the cognitive symptoms of older patients.

There are some pilot studies however that do show potential for Alpha-GPC to improve markers of power and force output

For increasing power output, the currently accepted dose of Alpha-GPC is 300-600mg taken 30-60 minutes before exercise

Woke AF contains 200mg of Alpha-GPC, which may provide a boost to cognitive functions but falls shy of a clinical dose for improving power output.

Woke AF Pre-Workout formula

Taurine

Taurine is an amino acid that plays a key role in energy metabolism and glucose and fat regulation.

Taurine also has natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Taken pre-workout, taurine can increase aerobic performance, boost strength and power, and enhance recovery by reducing feelings of muscle soreness.

While research on taurine and exercise is limited, the current dosing strategy is accepted at 1-3g taken prior to exercise.

Woke AF falls well below the amounts used in clinical research, providing only 100mg per scoop.

Dendrobium

Dendrobium is a plant from the orchid family that is native to tropical areas of Asia and New Zealand.

Dendrobium has long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for general health and well-being purposes. More recently it has been used in pre-workout supplements as a replacement for the banned stimulant, DMAA

Dendrobium is currently being studied for its use as a potential anti-depressant and is reported as having mood-boosting properties.

This makes it a welcome addition to pre-workouts since it might provide a happy/euphoric energy boost.

This is because it is reported that some dendrobium extracts can contain phenylethylamine (PEAs), which is a type of stimulant that can have similar effects to amphetamines.

There is currently insufficient evidence to establish a safe or effective clinical dose of dendrobium.

Deer Antler Velvet

Deer Antler Velvet is a unique ingredient that sets Bucked Up products apart from the rest.

As its name suggests, deer antler velvet is crushed up antler from deer or elk. Similar to dendrobium, it has roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine used for general health purposes.

While there is extremely limited research available, deer antler velvet does show potential for possibly increasing strength and power output.

In dietary supplements, we often find a dose around 500mg. The limited research trials that did show deer antler velvet as having the potential for increasing strength and power used a total daily dose of 2700 mg (1350 mg taken twice daily).

Woke AF contains 50mg of deer antler velvet extract, which falls far below any amount used in clinical research.

Synephrine

Synephrine, or bitter orange extract, comes from the bitter orange tree, which is native to Asia.

Synephrine is a central nervous system stimulant and is similar in structure to catecholamines (like adrenaline). Synephrine has effects that are very similar to ephedrine, like increased aerobic performance, reduced fatigue, and increased fat breakdown.

For improving athletic performance, it’s recommended to take a dose between 10mg and 53mg pre-workout.

Woke AF contains 40mg of synephrine, which should be enough to feel its performance-enhancing benefit.

An optimal dose would be 50mg, but since there are other stimulants (caffeine, dendrobium) in this formula, 40mg of synephrine is likely sufficient.

ActiGin ® and AstraGin ®

Woke AF contains two patented ingredients, ActiGin® (a blend of notoginseng root and rosa roxburghii) and AstraGin® (a blend of notoginseng root and astragalus root).

ActiGin® was specifically formulated to improve energy, boost endurance, and support recovery.

AstraGin® is formulated to support gut health, which then provides overall immune support and enhanced nutrient absorption.

Each manufacturer indicates that a clinical dose of their product is 50mg.

Woke AF contains 25mg of each ingredient, which technically falls below clinical dose standards.

Since they each contain the crossover ingredient of notoginseng root, my hypothesis is that by combining 25mg of each ingredient (totaling 50mg total between the two), they might provide close to the same benefit as having 50mg of either one individually.

Technically speaking, Woke AF falls short of clinical dose standards for both ingredients.

Highlights: What I Like About Woke AF

Pros vs Cons of taking Woke AF Pre-Workout

Great Mood-boosting Energy

Woke AF features a blend of caffeine, alpha GPC, and dendrobium, which work together to provide energy, boost mental focus, and increase mood.

Individual experiences with stimulants may vary, so I always recommend trying a half serving first to assess how you feel.

Good Pump

With a full clinical dose of citrulline, Woke AF provides a good muscle pump.

There are definitely products available on the market that provide a more substantial muscle pump that combines a variety of pump-enhancing ingredients.

Overall, though, I felt like Woke AF delivered a reasonable muscle pump. But, hose looking for something more intense might consider supplementing with additional glycerol or agmatine.

Bulk Supplements Glycerol Monostearate

Good Taste and Mixability

Woke AF is available in more than 20 flavors. They offer a variety of sweet and sour fruity and juice-like flavors. It mixes easily with a spoon or in a shaker cup.

With so many options to choose from, it’s incredibly likely that you will be able to find a flavor that suits your individual taste.

The small scoop size makes for a product that mixes easily in a small amount of water with little to no residue.

Good Value for the Ingredients Provided

Woke AF uses clinical doses of citrulline and beta-alanine as well as a high dose of caffeine. At $1.81 per serving, Woke AF delivers a hard-hitting, well-rounded pre-workout at a reasonable price.

Woke AF does use several ingredients that don’t have clinical doses established (like dendrobium and deer antler velvet) and it falls shy of clinical doses for a few other ingredients (like alpha-GPC and taurine).

Ultimately, the fact that Woke AF contains a full dose of two ingredients that have good evidence to support their effectiveness and high doses of stimulants makes Woke Af a good value.

Drawbacks What I Did Not Like About Woke AF

High Stimulant Content May Scare Consumers Away

Woke AF contains 333mg of caffeine, plus additional stimulants like synephrine and dendrobium. This might be too high for less experienced pre-workout users.

The caffeine + synephrine + dendrobium combination definitely provides intense energy and mental focus.

That being said, the amount of caffeine and stimulants may be too high for individuals who are not experienced pre-workout consumers.

This high amount of caffeine is also not recommended for anyone who works out later in the day (within 5 hours of bedtime).

How Does Woke AF Stack Up Against Our Criteria For Pre-Workout

Woke AF Pre-Workout

Price

Our rating: 3.5/5

It can be tricky to compare the cost value of pre-workouts directly across the board since there is so much variety in the number and doses of ingredients used.

In the realm of high-stimulant pre-workouts, there are some great products like Legion Pulse that cost around $2.25 per serving, and there are some decent products like Ryse Loaded Pre which cost as low as $1.33 per serving.

Overall, if you are looking for a high-stim pre-workout then I consider Woke AF to come in at a reasonable price.

Taste

Our rating: 5/5

Woke AF pre-workout is available in more than 20 different juice-like or fruity flavors in a wide variety of sweet or sour options. This makes it incredibly likely that you will find a flavor that you like.

From the brand Bucked Up, I have personally tried several flavors: Swole Whip, Aussie Fruit, Freedom, Rocket Pop, and Miami.

I have found each flavor to be enjoyable, though every flavor I have tried leans towards being sour or tart as opposed to sweet.

Mixability

Our rating: 5/5

Woke AF mixes easily and almost completely in a traditional shaker cup.

There is a small amount of residue that settles at the bottom of the product is left to sit, but this is remedied by swirling the product in your shaker cup as you drink it.

Energy

Our rating: 5/5

Woke AF is designed to provide substantial energy and it delivers. Woke AF provides long-lasting energy with a mood-boosting mental focus. I did not experience side effects like jitteriness or crashing afterward.

It’s important to note that each individual will respond differently to stimulants.

Even if two products have similar levels of caffeine, they could provide different experiences depending on which other ingredients are used or how the caffeine is sourced/processed.

As such, I always recommend starting with a half-serving to assess your personal tolerance and reduce the likelihood of unpleasant side effects.

Pump

Our rating: 3.5/5

Woke AF provides a full clinical dose of citrulline, an ingredient commonly used for increasing nitric oxide and providing a muscle pump.

With no other ingredients to complement citrulline, Woke AF provides a good pump, but not as significant as other pre-workouts on the market.

Bucked Up, the company that manufactures Woke AF, has a product called Pump-Ocalypse that can be taken alongside Woke AF for those who want to experience more significant muscle pumps.

Strength

Our rating: 4/5

Woke AF provides a good strength boost, most notably from the increased motivation and mental focus provided by the stimulant blend.

Despite not having many ingredients directly correlated with increasing strength, I hit several PRs on both my upper body and lower body lifts while testing this pre-workout.

Who Should Take Woke AF?

 Woke AF is for:

  • People who describe themselves as stimulant junkies and want a product high in caffeine that delivers laser focus
  • Experienced pre-workout users
  • People whose primary desire out of pre-workout is energy, mental focus, and stamina

Who Should Not Take Woke AF?

I would not recommend Woke AF for:

  • Anybody who works out in the evening, since 3 sources of stimulants are very likely to impact your sleep
  • Individuals who are sensitive to caffeine
  • People whose primary desire out of pre-workout is strength and pump

What Are Other Customers Saying About Woke AF?

On the Bucked Up website, Woke AF boasts a nearly perfect 4.9 out of 5-star rating. I can’t find how many reviews that’s based on, and I always take reviews from a supplement company’s page with a grain of salt.

Reviewers commenting on a brand page are more likely to already be fans of the brand, and in every single pre-workout or protein I have reviewed to date, the reviews on a company website are always a little bit higher than those from third-party retailers.

Even still, there is a lot to be gained from reading the reviews on the Bucked Up website.

Across a wide variety of flavors, reviewers rave about the great taste and amazing focus. Several reviewers also comment that after jumping around from product to product, they’ve found that Woke AF is one they are excited to stay with.

Browsing some third-party retailers like GNC.com and Bodybuilding.com, ratings ranged from 4.6 to 4.75 out of 5. While lower than the rating from the Bucked Up website, this is still overwhelmingly positive feedback.

The positive reviews from third-party retailers mimic both my experience as well as what was mentioned on the Bucked Up website: amazing taste, great energy, no jitters, and a decent pump.

I read through the one and two-star reviews of Woke AF to see if there were some common threads pertaining to what consumers didn’t like.

A few reviewers didn’t like the flavors they purchased, and others had issues with their product clumping up. Others felt like this product “didn’t hype them up at all” or they “felt nothing from it”.

As always, the best way to determine how you’ll feel is to try it yourself, but reviews are overwhelmingly positive and from my experience, this is definitely one worth trying.

Woke AF Alternatives?

Transparent Labs Bulk

Transparent Labs Bulk

Transparent Labs Bulk is a great alternative for individuals who want the clinical doses of ingredients that support strength, endurance, and muscle pump but want a lower level of caffeine.

I would have recommended the namesake pre-workout by the manufacturer of Woke AF, called Bucked Up, but it has a few shortcomings compared to Transparent Labs Bulk.

Most notably, Bucked Up falls short of clinical dose standards on the majority of ingredients. Since Bucked Up and Transparent Labs Bulk has a similar cost per serving and disclosed third-party testing, the advantage goes to Bulk.

Transparent Labs Bulk contains 200 mg of caffeine per serving, about 60 percent of what’s found in Woke AF.

Bulk has 8g of citrulline, 4g of beta-alanine, 2.5g of betaine, 1.3g of taurine, and 300mg of Alpha-GPC, all clinical doses. This combination provides great energy, strength, stamina, and mental focus without excessive stimulants.

Pump-Ocalypse

For those who work out late in the evening or want to avoid caffeine in their pre-workout altogether, Bucked Up offers a great alternative pre-workout in Pump-Ocalypse

Pump-Ocalypse is a great, well-rounded pre-workout that is designed to increase energy, stamina, and pump without any stimulants.

Pump-Ocalypse has 3.5g of glycerol, 3g of citrulline, 1g of arginine and 500mg of agmatine – all ingredients that are shown to support nitric oxide production and enhance blood flow, giving you a great muscle pump.

This pre-workout also features a unique patented ingredient called Peak O2™ which is a blend of mushrooms proven to increase energy, endurance, power and recovery. It allows users to feel an energy boost without caffeine.

On its own, Pump-Ocalypse comes in at $1.41 per serving, providing good overall value. It’s currently available in 5 different flavors: Blood Raz, Blue Raz, Grape Gainz, Miami, and Tropical.

You could also pair Pump-Ocalypse with Woke AF if you want to take your workout to the absolute max pairing high stimulants with more pump ingredients.

This is only a suitable option only for those with a flexible supplement budget since the combination of Pump-Ocalypse and Woke AF will run you a total of $3.24 per serving.

Are There Any Promos or Discounts For Woke AF?

Where many companies offer a loyalty discount or “subscribe and save” feature on their websites where the purchaser receives a discount if they set their products to auto ship on a regular basis, Bucked Up is one of few companies that doesn’t offer this.

The best way to save money on Bucked Up is to check back frequently on third party retailers like Amazon, GNC, Bodybuilding.com, or The Vitamin Shoppe. You may luck out with store wide sales allowing you to save money on your Bucked Up products.

The Bucked Up website has a page that features pre-built stacks, where they combine a collection of 3-6 different supplements based on your goals, and offer them at a discount.

There is also a clearance page on the Bucked Up website where you might be able to save money by taking advantage of discontinued flavors.
