As a supplement store manager and having tried 50+ whey protein powders in my career, I was impressed by the quality, mixability, and low cost of BodyTech Whey Isolate, but the awful taste makes me think twice about wanting to order it again.

Body tech is a brand made and distributed by Vitamin Shoppe. This is not the kind of brand that has a strong identity as we’ve seen with brands like Ghost and Ryse. 

They have a small landing page on the Vitamin Shoppe website, which advertises that BodyTech specializes in “the science of performance”, developing best-in-class solutions which are independently tested to ensure quality and potency. 

Where many companies flash their philosophy boldly at the top of their About Us pages, I did finally find more information about BodyTech after I scrolled to the very bottom of their page. 

Here they advertise that their slogan is #NoShortcuts and that they combine over four decades of sports nutrition experience with top-of-the-line products that undergo independent testing to meet and exceed the industry standards. 

Truthfully, this is a brand I would probably walk right past in the store, or skip over online because it looks kind of cheap and outdated. If I am browsing a protein shelf, and this is my selection, my eye is drawn to the other three products on the shelf, and not BodyTech.

Alongside their protein selection, which consists of whey and casein varieties, they also have supplements available for most categories including pre-workout, sleep and recovery, and amino acids. 

Overview of BodyTech Protein Powder 

BodyTech Whey Protein Isolate is made up exclusively of whey isolate, a fast-digesting protein that has undergone refinement to remove most of the fat and sugar. 

Aside from protein, the protein also contains natural and artificial flavors, soy lecithin, and additional flavors and sweeteners like cinnamon powder, salt, sucralose, and acesulfame potassium. 

I specifically had the cookies and cream flavor, which had crumbs in it that added additional ingredients like rice flour, sugar, palm oil, and cornstarch. 

The macronutrient breakdown of BodyTech protein is: 

• Protein: 25g  
• Carbohydrates:  2g
• Fat:  1g
• Sugar: 1g

BodyTech Isolate is a lower-calorie option, at 110 calories per serving. With 25g of protein making up 100 calories, BodyTech offers around 91% protein per scoop, putting it well into our criteria for an “excellent” protein source. 

After doing 20+ whey protein product reviews, our criteria for categorizing protein are as follows: 

• Excellent: more than 85% protein per scoop
• Good: 75-84% protein per scoop
• Reasonable: 65-74% protein per scoop
• Unacceptable: less than 65% protein per scoop

It’s worth noting that there are different allergens and nutrition info varies depending on the flavor. 

The peanut butter and chocolate peanut butter flavors, for example, have real peanuts in the formula and 130 calories. 

Highlights: What I Liked About BodyTech Protein

Mixability

BodyTech Whey Isolate is the best mixing protein powder I’ve ever tested and is a great option for anyone who is sensitive to textures or complains about the “chalky” or “gritty” texture of protein powders. 

In fact, the first time I mixed this in my protein shaker, I had to double-check that I added the protein to my shaker cup because the texture seemed too thin. 

Cost

By controlling the manufacturing process and distributing out of their own store, Vitamin Shoppe is able to keep the cost of BodyTech products low. Depending on the size of the container you buy, BodyTech Whey Isolate is available for between $1.19 and $1.81 per serving. 

A potential downside is that all flavors are not available in all sizes. Flavors like chocolate are available in 1.5, 3, and 5-pound size options where you can save money by buying big and getting a cheaper cost per serving. 

The 5lb tub retails for $84.99 for 71 servings, making it $1.19 per serving, which is inexpensive for any whey protein, nevermind a high quality isolate that offers 91% protein per scoop. This is an incredible value. 

Different Flavors Have Different Ingredients

Because of the variety of flavors, and some different ingredients between flavors, it’s likely that you can find a formula to suit your dietary preferences (e.g. soy free).

For example, some flavors are soy-free (French Vanilla, Unflavored, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Peanut Butter, Frosted Cereal, and Sorbet) by using sunflower lecithin in place of soy lecithin. 

Only the actual peanut butter flavors (Peanut Butter and Chocolate Peanut Butter) have peanuts. 

All products are gluten free. 

Some flavors, like Frosted Cereal, also advertise as being free of preservatives and synthetic colors. 

They also offer an unflavored option which has only whey protein isolate and sunflower lecithin, making it a good option for virtually anyone. 

Drawbacks: What I Didn’t Like About BodyTech Protein

The Taste Isn’t Great and Fell Flat

I personally tried the Cookies & Cream flavor, and I found it to be bland and have a chemical aftertaste. 

In defense of the BodyTech protein, I did just finish reviewing brands like Ryse and Rule 1 which have really rich and strong flavors. It’s possible that this one seemed bland in contrast to others that are part of my regular routine. 

Online reviews did seem to mimic my feelings about the Cookies and Cream flavor, so it’s possible that I just made a bad choice when I picked my flavor before reading the reviews. Other flavors like the cereal flavors and Oranges & Cream have much higher reviews. 

Certain Flavors Are Only Available in the Small Size (at a higher cost per serving)

Some flavors, like cinnamon cereal, are only available in a 1.5lb (22 serving) size which retails for $39.99. This makes it $1.81 per serving, which is on par with other whey isolates with a similar protein percentage. 

The great value that was mentioned above in the highlights comes into play when the 3lb or 5lb tubs are purchased, where the cost comes down to $1.19 to $1.51 per serving. 

If you’re not picky about flavor, then you can take advantage of the low cost per serving. If you want to enjoy some of the more unique flavor options, like Cinnamon Cereal or Frosted Cereal, then your only option is to pay the higher cost per serving. 

BodyTech Protein Review: My Experience

I almost didn’t give this protein a chance. I was so put off by the taste that I actually dumped out the shake, before remembering that I had to test it for digestibility and satiety as well. 

I’m not saying I wasn’t being overly dramatic, but I really didn’t like the taste when mixed with water. 

After my first experience with this product, I put it back in the cupboard and moved on to testing other products instead. As a result, this protein took a lot longer than my normal proteins for testing. 

While I stand by my statement that the Cookies & Cream flavor tastes terrible, I am glad that I tried this because the mixability is the best I’ve encountered, and this product had no negative side effects for me like gassiness or bloating. 

This protein could be a really great option for people who are sensitive to texture. If you find yourself complaining that your protein powders don’t dissolve completely, or you hate the “chalky” texture of protein powders, then chances are you’ll really enjoy BodyTech Isolate. 

One evening, I absentmindedly mixed my protein into a shaker cup and after I took the first sip, I had to open the cup to double-check that I had actually put the protein powder into the cup. 

I couldn’t figure out the best way to photograph this to show you, but I swirled the protein powder around the cup as much as possible to try to catch some powder residue on the sides of the cup and the only thing you can see are some small cookie pieces which got left behind. 

The other really enticing thing about BodyTech Isolate is the fact that you can get it for as low as $1.19 per scoop, which is incredible value for a whey isolate, especially one that provides more than 90% protein. 

I am reluctant, however, to order the 5lb tub to get that great value considering how much I disliked the taste of the Cookies & Cream flavor. 

If you prioritize high quality, good mixability, and a lower cost per serving over taste, then this product is probably worth it. 

If you place a high value on how good a product tastes above all, then I might skip past this option.

BodyTech provides all pertinent information on its label in a straightforward, easy-to-read format. 

They go above and beyond by providing additional information about whey protein isolate and its benefits on the label. 

Even though it can be inferred by the ingredients list that the products do not contain certain ingredients, like gluten, I appreciate that BodyTech clearly outlines allergens or potential irritants that the product does not contain under the listed allergens. 

For example, my cookies and cream protein tub shows that it does contain milk and soy, and clearly states that it does not contain gluten or artificial colors.

Fat Content Transparency 

Our rating: 4.5/5

BodyTech clearly states the total grams of fat (1g), Saturated Fat (0g) and Trans Fat (0g) in their products. 

We have seen some brands go above and beyond by listing the amounts of mono- and poly-unsaturated fats in their formulas. 

Those companies have pushed the bar up for a 5/5 rating, and the absence of this in the BodyTech formula is the only reason that they don’t have a full rating for this criteria. 

Effective Ingredients

BodyTech uses high-quality protein and does not have high amounts of unnecessary ingredients like preservatives added to their formulas. 

I appreciate that BodyTech is conscious enough to use products like beetroot to add color to their protein powders, instead of using artificial colors and food dyes. 

Some flavors claim to be soy free and use sunflower lecithin instead of soy lecithin. Since this is an option, I would prefer to see them use sunflower lecithin in all of their formulas so that their entire product line could be soy free. 

They also use artificial sweeteners, which despite being FDA-approved, have mixed reviews among consumers. For anyone who prefers to stay away from artificial sweeteners, BodyTech Isolate does not provide a naturally sweetened option. 

Protein Percent of Calories

There is nothing to complain about here. BodyTech Whey Isolate provides more than 90 percent protein per scoop, well into our criteria for an excellent source of protein. 

Taste/flavor

Our rating: 2.5/5

The Cookies & Cream flavor definitely left a lot to be desired, and based on my experience with this flavor I would be unlikely to buy any other tubs without getting a sample of a different flavor first. 

This drawback could be related specifically to the Cookies & Cream flavor, and likely the French Vanilla flavor as well since those had the poorest reviews for taste online. 

Many consumers sang the praises of other flavors like Oranges & Cream so the problem could just be my own. 

I found the Cookies & Cream flavor bland and felt that it had a strong chemical taste with no recognizable taste of an Oreo-like cookie. 

It did taste better in milk, and the taste was mostly masked by oatmeal when I mixed it in, but if I were to be making a judgment based solely on taste, I wouldn’t repurchase this product. 

Mixability

BodyTech Whey Isolate is the best mixing whey protein isolate that I have tried. It had no clumps, no chalky texture, and no residue. It mixed easily into water with very minimal effort when a protein shaker cup was used. 

Texture (Thick or Thin)

Body Tech Isolate mixes up very thin and adds almost no texture to water or milk.  Because of its good mixability, it stirs easily into yogurt and oatmeal and is a good option for anybody who is sensitive to texture. 

Satiety

Our rating: 1/5

Being made of exclusively whey isolate, and being low in overall calories, this protein is not designed to keep you full. You can expect to feel satisfied for one hour, maybe two at the most. 

I often used this first thing in the morning, after my morning workout. When I had this on its own mixed with water, I was reaching for a morning snack around 90 minutes after drinking my shake. 

It does have slightly prolonged satiety when added to smoothies or oatmeal, but that satiety is mostly due to the high fiber of the other ingredients and not the protein itself. 

Who Is BodyTech For? 

BodyTech is for: 

• Someone looking for an easy-to-digest, post-workout protein

• Someone with gluten sensitivity (all flavors are gluten-free)

• Anybody looking for a protein source that is very low in fat and sugar, including keto dieters

Who Shouldn’t Take BodyTech Whey?

BodyTech Whey protein is not for:

BodyTech Customer Reviews

The reviews on the Vitamin Shoppe website varied greatly depending on which flavor was being reviewed. Granted, there were not very many reviews (French Vanilla, for example, had 16 reviews). Most flavors on the Vitamin Shoppe website were rated between 3 and 4 out of 5 stars. 

Some flavors, like Oranges & Cream and Salted Caramel had full 5/5 star ratings on 19 and 11 reviews, respectively. 

Other flavors, like DC Wonder Woman Rainbow Sherbet, had 3/5 star ratings based on 2 reviews. One reviewer gave the product 1 out of 5 stars and the other gave the product 5 out of 5 stars, so it’s difficult to draw conclusions from just that website alone. 

On Amazon, BodyTech Isolate did have more reviews, with 4.6 out of 5 stars over around 850 reviews. Still not as large of a sample size as we’ve seen with products like Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey which has over 130,000 reviews. 

Even still, the larger review population on Amazon does give us a more clear picture of what people think of BodyTech Whey Isolate. 

Overall, customers praise the product for its digestibility and mixability. Any complaints on taste generally have to do with the product being too sweet. I did find a review that felt that the cookies and cream flavor was too artificial for their liking (which was also my experience) but flavors like Oranges & Cream have fantastic reviews on Amazon, as they did on the Vitamin Shoppe website.

Transparent Labs Isolate is gluten free, same as BodyTech Isolate, but Transparent Labs has the advantage of having no artificial sweeteners, no artificial coloring, and no preservatives.
