Alani Nu’s pink and vibrant label definitely has a strong appeal towards female exercisers, but the formula is suitable for anyone. 

The energy blend found in Alani Nu Pre consists of caffeine, tyrosine, and l-theanine. The combination of caffeine and tyrosine provides good energy and mental focus, and the l-theanine helps prevent a crash afterward. 

Alani Nu contains a full clinical dose of citrulline malate (6g) to provide a decent pump and blood flow. 

It also contains 1.6g of beta-alanine, which will help to increase muscular endurance.  The 1.6g dose is typically a “maintenance dose”, and more may be required initially to saturate the muscles (more on this below).

Claims vs Reality:  How I Felt After Taking Alani Nu Pre Workout

I was really excited to finally be able to put Alani Nu’s pre-workout to the test. 

I’ve managed a supplement store for over a decade, and Alani Nu’s products are some of the most highly requested and anticipated products out of any other brands we carry. 

Alani Nu’s products really stand out on the shelf, with their bright pink and teal packaging. 

The flavors are also a massive draw, as Alani Nu has steered away from the traditional Fruit Punch and Sour Cherry flavors to offer unique options like Mimosa and Hawaiian Shaved Ice. 

One thing that was a big issue for me personally in testing other pre-workouts with massive scoop sizes like Pre-Kaged was the sheer amount of water needed in order to dissolve the pre-workout. 

It was nice to try a product like Alani Nu that still has a small scoop size (10g) but has clinical doses of ingredients to provide a legitimate performance boost. 

This is in contrast to options like C4 Original that have a small scoop size but don’t have clinical doses of performance-enhancing ingredients. 

Being able to mix my pre-workout in a really small amount of water is a big draw for me since I don’t like having a stomach full of water while I am working out or having to stop and pee three times during my workout. 

For all of its pros, the reality is that Alani Nu is a very basic formula and I found its effects just a bit too mild (keep in mind, I’m an experienced pre-workout user).   

I have learned to appreciate a high dose of beta-alanine and I really love the strength and mental focus benefits from ingredients like betaine and alpha-GPC, which aren’t in the Alani Nu formula. 

I think the Alani Nu Pre-Workout is the ideal option for someone who is new to pre-workout and is looking for something that will provide a boost without being too intense. 

Traditionally, C4 Original has been the “go-to” recommendation for people starting out, but since Alani Nu actually has clinical doses of the majority of its ingredients and has tastier flavors, I think it’s a more suitable option.

Citrulline Malate

Citrulline is an amino acid that is found naturally in many foods, but is especially high in watermelon. 

Citrulline acts as a nitric oxide booster in the body, meaning it increases levels of nitric oxide. 

Because nitric oxide helps the body to dilate and constrict blood vessels, it can improve blood flow to the muscles and support cardiovascular health.

When taken pre-workout, citrulline can help delay fatigue resulting in an increase in muscular endurance and strength as well as enhance recovery. 

More research is needed on the effects of citrulline pre-workout, but so far the optimal dose appears to be 6-8g of citrulline taken approximately 1 hour before exercise. 

With 6g of citrulline per scoop, Alani Nu pre-workout meets clinical dose standards for citrulline. 

Beta-Alanine

Beta-alanine is an amino acid most commonly known for its side effect of paresthesia (skin tingling). 

Beta-alanine plays a key role in the creation of carnosine in the body. Carnosine acts as a buffer in the body, where it buffers the hydrogen ions that build up and cause fatigue. 

By having more beta-alanine in your body, you increase muscle carnosine levels by anywhere from 15-85%, resulting in an increase in muscular endurance. 

In order for beta-alanine to be most effective, it should be taken daily over the long term (at least 2 weeks) at a dose of 3-6g daily to fully saturate the body. 

Once you’ve completed a saturation period, a dose of 1.2g daily afterward is sufficient for a maintenance dose. 

Alani Nu Pre-Workout contains 1.6g of beta-alanine per scoop. This is sufficient as a maintenance dose but doesn’t technically meet clinical dose standards if you haven’t done a saturation period. 

If you want to take Alani Nu Pre, but also want to fully saturate your beta-alanine levels, you can supplement with extra beta-alanine on the side. Remember to take beta-alanine every single day, not just on workout days for optimal long-term results.

L-Tyrosine

Tyrosine is a unique ingredient, and a bit of a controversial one when it comes to pre-workout supplements. 

Tyrosine is an amino acid that is a precursor to dopamine and norepinephrine and can improve cognitive function after just one dose. 

As a pre-workout supplement, it can delay fatigue allowing for increased work output and performance. 

The issue, if you want to call it that, is that the research looking at l-tyrosine pre-workout uses a dose of 100-150mg per kg of body weight, which translates to between 7 and 10g for a 150lb person. 

The majority of pre-workouts, however, only use a dose between 0.5 and 2g.

Despite pre-workouts using doses far below the clinically researched ones, there is a lot of anecdotal support in favor of using l-tyrosine in pre-workouts to increase energy and mental focus. 

The 500mg of tyrosine found in Alani Nu Pre-workout is on the low end of what is commonly used in pre-workout but is still likely to support the caffeine in boosting cognitive function. 

Caffeine

Caffeine is a compound that is found naturally in over 60 plants including tea, coffee beans, and cacao pods. 

Caffeine is a stimulant that speeds up the central nervous system which increases energy, alertness, and mood. 

Taking caffeine before exercise can increase performance in virtually every facet of exercise including high-intensity activities, endurance, strength, power, and cardiovascular performance

Everyone will respond differently to caffeine intake, so there isn’t a specific clinically effective dose, but the FDA does recommend a safe upper limit of 400mg daily.

Alani Nu contains 200mg of caffeine per serving, equal to approximately  2 cups of instant coffee. 

This is definitely enough to feel an energy and mood boost but still allows for the addition of other caffeine sources in your day like tea, coffee, or an energy drink while staying below the FDA’s upper limit. 

If you are sensitive to caffeine, you may want to avoid taking this pre-workout within 5 hours of bedtime so that it does not negatively impact your sleep. 

L-Theanine

Theanine is an amino acid that is found naturally in tea and some species of mushrooms. It can help promote relaxation without causing drowsiness. 

Theanine can decrease the activity of specific neurotransmitters in the brain associated with anxiety. It may also increase the activity of mood-boosting neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. 

Theanine is commonly added to pre-workouts because it can help to reduce or eliminate the negative side effects commonly associated with caffeine like anxiety or jitteriness, resulting in a calmer energy without a subsequent energy crash

L-Theanine should be taken at a dose of 200-400mg and may become more effective with consistent, daily supplementation.

Tastes Good

Alani Nu is well known for its great-tasting products. Their pre-workout is available in 10 unique, juice-like flavors with limited editions and collaborations popping up throughout the year. 

The fact that the Alani Nu Pre-Workout does not contain a high number of ingredients helps make for a good-tasting product.

A lot of the raw ingredients used in pre-workout supplements are naturally sour or bitter. When more of these ingredients are used, companies have to work harder to mask the poor taste of the ingredients. 

With fewer ingredients used, it’s a lot easier to make a great-tasting product that is not overpowering.

Great Energy Without Jitteriness

Alani Nu’s pre-workout features a reasonable amount of caffeine (200mg), which is paired with l-tyrosine and l-theanine. This combination provides energy and mental focus without the jitteriness or anxiety commonly associated with pre-workouts. 

L-tyrosine can help to boost the cognitive boosting effects of caffeine and l-theanine promotes a calmness and relaxation effect when paired with caffeine. 

Simple Formula

Alani Nu Pre-Workout only has 5 active ingredients, which helps to reduce the likelihood of negative side effects and makes the formula suitable for a wide variety of pre-workout users. 

Some common side effects associated with high-dose and elaborate pre-workouts include nausea, stomach upset, jitteriness, and anxiety or heart palpitations. 

With a simple formula that is relatively low in caffeine, Alani Nu Pre-Workout reduces the likelihood of experiencing these negative side effects. 

While the formula might be too basic or under-dosed for experienced lifters, you can easily add additional ingredients like creatine, betaine, or extra beta-alanine for an added performance boost.

Drawbacks What I Did Not Like About Alani Nu Pre Workout

Doesn’t Provide The Same “Kick” That Other Pre-Workouts Do

The simple, lower-caffeine formula won’t provide the same “buzz” or “kick” that higher-dosed pre-workouts will. The low amount of beta-alanine also won’t elicit a strong skin-tingling feeling.

This is, of course, a subjective experience. 

Some users are looking for a pre-workout that specifically WON’T elicit the effects mentioned above. 

Some experienced pre-workout users, however, like feeling the beta-alanine tingles or buzz from stimulants to help them know that their pre-workout has “kicked in” and is ready to go. 

Alani Nu contains just enough ingredients to support energy and blood flow, but won’t provide significant muscle pump or big feelings of strength. 

Honestly, there’s really not much to dislike about this product. 

The only potential drawback for more experienced users is that it isn’t a particularly strong product, but I think that is what can make it appealing as a point of entry or stepping stone for someone new to pre-workout.

The low cost comes at the trade-off of Alani Nu not having a significant number of ingredients. 

There are products like Transparent Labs Bulk that offer twice as many active ingredients for $1.66/serving, which is right around the average cost of pre-workouts and much better value.

Even with 200mg of caffeine, Alani Nu Pre-workout falls on the lower end of the energy scale for caffeinated pre-workouts.

Our rating: 2/5

Despite having 6g of l-citrulline, an ingredient known for enhancing nitric oxide levels to create a muscle pump, I didn’t find the pump effect particularly noticeable in Alani Nu’s Pre-Workout.

There are a lot of factors that can influence muscle pump, like hydration or dietary intake fluctuations. 

After trying Alani Nu Pre-Workout consistently for several weeks, I felt that a lack of muscle pump was something that stayed consistent throughout. 

This could be a personal bias, in that I had spent many months testing products that contained up to 5 different ingredients for muscle pump, so this might just seem weak in comparison. 

Strength

Our rating: 2/5

With few ingredients to support strength, the only significant strength boost comes from the increase in energy and mental focus that helps you squeeze out the final few repetitions. 

In defense of Alani Nu’s Pre-Workout, it doesn’t advertise itself as being a product to elicit significant strength gains. It advertises itself as a product for energy, endurance, and pump.

In my experience as a manager of a supplement store for the past 10 years, I have learned that Alani Nu fans are incredibly loyal. 

It took a while for Alani Nu products to be released in my home country, and we were fielding requests for their products for years before they were available. 

This sentiment is evident on the Alani Nu website, where the pre-workout boasts a 4.9/5 star rating on over 20 thousand reviews. 

Oftentimes brand websites will have slightly higher ratings than wholesale websites like Amazon.com, so we usually take those ratings with a grain of salt.

That being said, 20 thousand reviews is a remarkably large sample size, so it’s clear that users are loving the Alani Nu Pre-Workout. 

Of the 20,393 reviews, only 39 of those gave a 1/5 star rating. Some of the reasons for these low reviews included disliking the taste or feeling like the pre-workout didn’t “do anything” for them.

The vast majority had to do with shipping issues like delays or the product not arriving.
